San Marino jest stolicą Najjaśniejszej Republiki San Marino, najstarszej republiki świata. Mieszka tu ok. 4.500 osób, a samo miasto wpisane jest na listę UNESCO. Miasto założono już w 301 roku przez kamieniarza Świętego Marinusa, który skrył się wśród tutejszych wzgórz przed prześladowaniami Dioklecjana. W XI w. zbudowano tu 3 potężne twierdze, mające chronić miasto przed najazdami, a w XIII w. opasano miasto murami obronnymi.  Do dziś miasto-państwo jest pozostałością po wczesnowłoskich tworach państwowych, które pomimo różnych kolei losu zostało nietknięte, utrzymuje stosunki dyplomatyczne, bije własne monety, znaczki. Są tu dwie uczelnie wyższe, ale ludność zajmuje się głównie handlem.

San Marino is the capital of the Serene Republic of San Marino, the world's oldest republic. There are approximately 4,500 people and the town is inscribed into the UNESCO list. The city has already established in the year 301 by stonemason Saint Marinus, who hid himself among the local hills, trying to avoid the persecution of Diocletian. In the XI c., three massive fortresses were built to protect the city against the incursions, and in the XIII c. town was encircled with the city walls. To this day, city-state is the remnant of earlyitalian states, that despite the different fortunes have been untouched, maintains diplomatic relations, beats its own coins, stamps. There are two universities, but the population is mainly trading.

Tutaj najdalej można dojechać samochodem. Wyżej jest już tylko stare miasto z uliczkami tak wąskimi, że niewiele wozów się zmieści. Zresztą wjazd możliwy jest tylko dla uprzywilejowanych.

San Marino to niezwykle urocze miasto i państwo o niepowtarzalnym charakterze i klimacie, niby włoskim, a jednak dość unikatowym w skali Półwyspu Apenińskiego. Na pewno warto tu zajrzeć, choćby na jeden dzień.

San Marino is a nice city and country with unique character - somehow italian, but still different in Italian Peninsula. It's worth to come here, even just for one day.
