Gierłoż to obecnie mała wioska, głównie znana z osławionego Wilczego Szańca - głównej kwatery Hitlera. W XIV w. teren należał do  Hansa von Görlitz, który miał tu zamek myśliwski - od jego nazwiska wzięła się nazwa wsi. Dopiero w XX w. powstała tu osada, należąca do Juliusa von Normanna. W 1940 Hitler wydał rozkaz aby wybudować tu na okolicznych bagnach schron - był on blisko granicy ZSRR, daleko od szlaków i w środku lasu, co zapewniało bezpieczeństwo, a zarazem pozwalało trzymać rękę na pulsie. Zadanie budowy otrzymał inż. Fritz Todt. Pod pozorem budowy fabryki chemicznej powstał tu schron, który nigdy nie został wytropiony - potrzeba było sabotażu niemieckich oficerów, żeby dokonać zamachu na życie Hitlera - dodajmy, że nieudanego...  20.07.1944 płk Claus von Stauffenberg zdetonował bombę w pokoju narad, jednak Hitler otrzymał tylko powierzchowne rany. Obecnie wieś liczy niewiele ponad 20 mieszkańców, a główną atrakcją jest sam Wilczy Szaniec. Oto garść zdjęć z tego tajemniczego miejsca.     

Gierłoż is now a small village, mostly known for the infamous Wolf's Lair - Hitler's headquarters. In the XIV c. the area belonged to Hans von Görlitz, who had a castle here - after his name the village has been called. Only in the XX century there was a settlement here, which belonged to Julius von Normann. In 1940, Hitler gave the order to build here in the surrounding swamps the shelter - it was close to the border of the USSR, far from the trails and in the middle of the forest, which provided security, and also allowed to keep an eye on the situation with Soviets. Engineer Fritz Todt received the task of building the shelter. Under the guise of building a chemical plant there was a shelter, which has never been traced - to sabotage Hitler's life there were some German officers needed - we should add, that it was a missed try ... 20/07/1944 Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg detonated a bomb in a meeting room, but Hitler received only superficial wounds. Currently the village consists of little more than 20 residents and the main attraction there it is the same Wolf's Lair. Here are some pictures of this mysterious place.
