Spore górskie miasto (ponad 32.000 mieszkańców) jest znane w Polsce i nie tylko przede wszystkim z piwa. Ale nie samym piwem żywiec stoi i miasto samo w sobie tez jest bardzo ładne i ciekawe! A przekonałem się o tym w czasie wizyty w mieście. Samo miasto wzmiankowane było juz w 1308 roku, a prawa miejskie otrzymał w 1327. Już w XVI rozpoczęła się trwająca do dziś produkcja piwa. W czasie potopu Szwedzkiego armia Karola Gustawa splądrowała i spaliła część miasta. W 1838 Żywiec stał się własnością Habsburgów, którzy w 1854 założyli tu, działający do dziś browar. Habsburgowie cały czas byli pro-polscy, a w czasie II wojny światowej Karol odmowił podpisania volkslisty i zażądał traktowania jak polski oficer (w końcu nim był...)! Zresztą ruch niepodległościowy był bardzo żywy w mieście i objawiał się demonstracjami aż do I wojny swiatowej. Po wojnie okazało się, że zywiec to małe i biedne miasteczko. Dołączono więc okoliczne wsie, zabudowano kamienicami, organizowano jarmarki. Miasto stanęło na nogi. W 1939 miasto zbombardowano i przyłączono do III Rzeszy pod nazwą Saybusch. Po wojnie miasto odbudowano i dziś, głównie dzięki klimatowi i browarowi, Żywiec kwitnie i jest bardzo przyjemnym miejscem.

Żywiec is a quite big town in the mountains (over 32.000 inhabitants) and it's known for the mark of beer. But it's not just about the beer and the town itself is very nice and interesting too. The first notes about Zywiec come from 1308 and it got city rights in 1327. In XVI they started production of beer here. During the Swedish assault in th XVII c. the town was plundered and partly burnt. In 1838 Żywiec became a property of Habsburgs family, who started a brewery in 1854. They were always on Polish side and even during the II war Karol Habsburg denied to sign the volkslist and demanded to be treated as an officer of Polish army (he was one anyway!). Besides, the independece movement was very strong there and people were demonstrating till the end of I world war. After the war it showed, that Żywiec is poor, little town. They connected it with surrounding villages, built some houses, organised big markets; so the town raised itself up. In 1939 Nazis bombed the town and took it into the area of Germany under the name of Saybusch. After the war the town was rebuilt and right now it's a pretty town and a very nice place to visit.

As I have mentioned, the brewery was raised by Habsburgs in 1854, and the mark above is well-known in most of the countries all over the world.

Ratusz.
Powstał pod koniec XIX w. na miejscu starego, drewnianego ratusza. Ostatnio, kosztem ponad miliona Euro, ratusz wyremontowano, choć kontrowersje w mieście budzi kolor obecnej elewacji...

It was built at the end of XIX c. in the place of the old, wooden one. Lately it has been renovated with over million Euro. But the colour of the elevation is a bit... controversial :P
