Asyż to stare miasto niedaleko Perugii, zamieszkane przez ok. 25000 ludzi. Stara osada etruska była już znana w III w pne w Imperium Rzymskim jako Asisium. Od XII w. miasto należało do księstwa Spoleto, toczącego wiele wojen z sąsiadami. W 1184 ustanowiono samorząd miejski i Asyż uzyskał niepodległość. W 1367 miasto należało do Państwa Kościelnego, a od 1860 jest w granicach Królestwa Włoch. W tym mieście urodzili się św. Franciszek i św. Klara. W 1986 papież JP II zapoczątkował wspólne, ekumeniczne Światowe Dni Modlitw o Pokój. W 1997 miasto nawiedziło potężne trzęsienie ziemi.
Assisi is an old town near Perugia, inhabited by about 25000 men. The old Etruscan settlement was already known in the III century BC in the Roman Empire as Asisium. From the XII century the town belonged to the Duchy of Spoleto, pending a lot of wars with its neighbors. The municipal government established in 1184 and Assisi gained independence. In 1367 the town belonged to the Papal States, and since 1860 is a part of the Kingdom of Italy. In this city St. Francis and St. Klara were born. In 1986, Pope John Paul II launched the ecumenical World Day of Prayer for Peace. In 1997, the city struck a powerful earthquake.
