Monreale to niewielkie miasto (ponad 31.000 mieszkańców) na wzgórzu ponad Palermo. Miasto założone zostało na siedzibę biskupa, który nie był bezpieczny w czasie podboju Sycylii przez Arabów. W XI w., dzięki podbojowi Normanów, katolicy odzyskali wolność i biskup powrócił do swojej siedziby w Palermo. Król William II umieścił tu w XII w. siedzibę arcybiskupstwa. Dziś to ciche, turystyczne miasteczko z piękną katedrą i wspaniałym widokiem na Palermo i wyspę.

Monreale is a small city (population over 31,000) on a hill above Palermo. The city was founded as the seat of the bishop, who was not safe at the time of the conquest of Sicily by the Arabs. In the XI century, thanks to the Norman conquest, Roman Catholic bishop got free and returned to his headquarters in Palermo. King William II, placed the seat of the Archbishopric there in the XII century. Today it is a quiet tourist town with a beautiful cathedral and the magnificent view of Palermo and the island.
