Varna is the third city in Bulgaria (312,000 inhabitants). It's a very old city, but it's not clearly visible. It was raised up in 580 BC as a Roman settlement Odessos, at beginning belonging to Roman Empire, than Bisantium till VII c., when it was destroyed by Slovians. They raised a new town, Varna, called from slovian word 'vran' which meant 'black'. It was a very important port of the Second Bulgarian Empire. That was the reason that the Turks attacked and plundered the city in XIV w. In 1444 Polish king, Władysław III of Poland tried to get the city from Islamic hands but he was defeated by the forces of Murad II and died there. Varna became the strong fort of Ottoman Empire. The city has been in the borders of Bulgaria since 1878.

Roman baths.

Baths was build during the reigns of Antonius Pinius in the middle of II c and abandoned in V c.

The baths are on the corner of San Stefano and ChanKrum and I think they are worth seeing and spending 1 Euro...

The city ain't overwhelming, but it's nice to wander among beautiful houses from the beginning of the XX c. There are many shops of well-known brands with things in good prices. One of those streets is taken only by shoe shops... And it's worth to see the Dolphinarium and go down to the sea shore.
